Our Patron

Chris Boardman CBE is a celebrated figure in British cycling and an advocate for inclusive active travel. With a distinguished career as one of the UK’s most successful professional cyclists and a continued commitment to making cycling accessible for all, Chris brings exceptional experience and influence to his role as Patron of Wheels for All.

Chris first rose to international prominence as a specialist in time trials and prologue stages. He made history by winning the inaugural men’s World Time Trial Championship in 1994, claimed Olympic gold in the individual pursuit at the 1992 Barcelona Games, and broke the world Hour Record three times. During his professional career he also won three prologue stages at the Tour de France, wearing the iconic yellow jersey on each occasion.

Following his retirement from professional cycling, Chris transitioned into roles focused on supporting sport and active travel. He has served in a number of high-profile public and community roles, including Greater Manchester’s Cycling and Walking Commissioner, Transport Commissioner, and Commissioner of Active Travel England. He is also Chair of Sport England, leading efforts to expand sports participation and physical activity nationwide. In recognition of his services to active travel, Chris was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2024.

Chris has supported Wheels for All from its earliest days, first connecting with the charity over 30 years ago when its first hub opened in Manchester. In his Patron role he provides strategic guidance, raises awareness of inclusive cycling, and champions the organisation’s mission to create opportunities for disabled people and those with long-term health conditions to enjoy cycling. His advocacy strengthens Wheels for All’s vision of a future where everyone, regardless of ability, can experience the freedom and wellbeing benefits of cycling.
