What does a ride leader do?
A ride leader delivers guided bike rides for groups of beginner and intermediate level participants on quiet roads and cycle paths.
Why become a ride leader?
As a Ride Leader, you’ll guide participants on safe, enjoyable rides while creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for people of all abilities. You’ll help new riders gain confidence and be the friendly face that makes everyone feel included and valued. From planning routes to ensuring equipment is ready, your leadership will shape memorable experiences that bring joy, achievement, and connection to every participant. It’s a role where your enthusiasm, care, and passion for cycling truly change lives.
What can I get involved with in this role?
You can get involved with:
- Leading rides following the Wheels for All guidelines
- Completing pre and post ride administration tasks
- Promoting helmet use for all to protect riders and volunteers from injury
- Planning and reviewing the rides for the safest and most enjoyable experience
- Helping to prepare and pack away after a ride e.g.
- Preparing cycling activities, registering riders, risk assessing the bikes, checking equipment, pumping up tyres and buddying up with new members
- Risk assessing the route for hazards
- Providing a warm, friendly welcome to all riders as the public face of Wheels for All, answering any questions and encouraging people to get involved in future rides
What makes a great ride leader?
They understand ride preparation, group management, risk assessment, and route planning, and apply this knowledge confidently to lead every ride safely. They communicate clearly, encourage participants, and build positive connections with riders and volunteers alike. With approachability, patience, and integrity, they make everyone feel valued and supported, while their reliability, organisation, and initiative ensure every ride runs successfully.
Do I require any training for this role?
All ride leaders complete a recognised ride leader training course, learning how to deliver guided bike rides for groups of beginner and intermediate level riders on roads and cycle paths. The training will cover areas such as preparing for a ride, group management, risk management, route planning and good practice guidelines.
