When Mike first arrived at the Movement Suite at Life Leisure Avondale, cycling with his legs felt like something firmly in the past. Five years earlier, he had experienced a stroke that left him with limited mobility and reduced strength down his right side, creating both physical and emotional barriers to movement and confidence. But with his wife Sindy by his side, he was determined to keep pushing towards progress—one small step at a time.
At the beginning of his Bike Buddy journey, Mike relied entirely on a hand cycle. It was a safe place to start, helping him build strength and discover a sense of freedom he feared he’d lost. Each session offered something new: a little more power, a little more control, and a growing belief that he was capable of more than he once imagined. His determination, paired with consistent rehab support, became the driving force behind a remarkable transformation.
As Mike grew stronger, the team introduced him to a recumbent trike, a move that felt almost unthinkable at one stage. Sitting down, placing his feet on the pedals, and using his legs to power the cycle was a milestone he never expected to reach again. Yet with Sindy cheering him on, he did it. Each turn of the pedals symbolised something bigger than exercise: courage, progress, and the return of confidence.
‘Mike thoroughly enjoyed the cycling sessions it gives him the ability to ride the bikes with little assistance which makes him feel good it’s great for his mental health and makes him feel he’s crossed another hurdle and that makes me feel great that he feels this way but without your help he wouldn’t have succeeded with this’ Sindy told us.
Sindy’s journey was just as inspiring. Although she had never ridden a bike before, she decided to learn alongside Mike. In just 30 minutes, she was pedalling independently on a two‑wheeler for the very first time—a moment of pride that strengthened their shared belief in what’s possible. Their progress soon grew into something even more meaningful.
Mike set himself an extraordinary challenge: to cycle 62 miles in October 2025 to raise money for the Stroke Association. What began as gentle movement in rehab had evolved into a powerful fundraising mission and a bold personal goal that reflects his courage and resilience.
Together, Mike and Sindy’s story shows how inclusive cycling can unlock independence, confidence, and joy—even when the road seems uncertain.
Their journey is a reminder that with the right support, encouragement, and belief, new possibilities are always within reach.
