Session Lead
National
“I get terrific value from the responsibility for ensuring that riders and volunteers are safe and in making the session a success. Guiding people to the right roles and encouraging appropriate interactions and feedback is key. A good session for me is one where Volunteers and Riders all enjoyed themselves.”
— Clive, Volunteer
What do session leads do?
A session lead oversees the session and coordinates team members to successfully deliver a safe and engaging session.
Why become a session lead?
As a Session Lead, you’ll be at the heart of each session, creating a welcoming and empowering environment where everyone can enjoy cycling. You’ll manage session registers, and perform risk assessments, ensuring that every session runs smoothly and safely. It’s more than just delivering a session — it’s about giving people the opportunity to build confidence, connect with others, and discover what they’re capable of. If you’re someone who enjoys working with people, values inclusion, and wants to make a positive impact in your community, leading a Wheels for All session is an inspiring and rewarding way to make a difference in people’s lives.
“It is so rewarding to help create a friendly, inclusive environment that people feel valued helping at, and turn up in all weathers. There are duties and responsibilities that go with the role, but these are minor and our volunteers help with these all the time! I also think the role is to feedback to local management any issues and solutions or proposals, so a session lead does become more integral to the organisation.”
— Clive, Volunteer
What can I get involved with in this role?
You can get involved with:
- Managing sessions in line with Wheels for All policies and procedures
- Completing session registers on our Kinetic+ delivery app
- Ensuring there are sufficient resources present to run the session (people, equipment, and documentation)
- Ensuring dynamic risk assessments performed
- Preparing and understands the session routes and activities
- Planning, recording and communicating appropriate routes including hazards, risks, and mitigations
“Apart from the standard duties to ensure that the operation is welcoming, safe and secure, the main role would be to provide guidance and encouragement to other volunteers. We are lucky to have some very motivated, talented and experienced volunteers but teamwork and general safety awareness is important. I like to think that volunteers are enabled to use their own initiative.”
— Clive, Volunteer
What makes a great session lead?
They are calm, confident, and proactive — able to plan ahead, adapt to changing circumstances, and make quick, thoughtful decisions to keep sessions safe and enjoyable. They communicate clearly with participants, carers, and volunteers, fostering a sense of teamwork and trust. Most importantly, a great Session Lead is approachable and encouraging, making every participant feel valued and supported, regardless of ability or experience. Their leadership inspires confidence, promotes inclusion, and ensures that every Wheels for All session runs smoothly, safely, and with plenty of smiles along the way.
Do I require any training for this role?
All Session Leads complete our Wheels for All Training, equipping them with the skills and confidence to safely run and manage sessions while creating a positive, enjoyable experience for participants and carers.
