Cycle and Equipment Checker

National

After what seems like a lifetime working on bikes, and looking for a hands on volunteering opportunity after moving to a new area, Wheels for All has proven to be the perfect fit for me.

What does a cycle and equipment checker do?

A cycle and equipment checker supports our fleet of cycles and associated equipment ensuring everything is clean ready to use, safe to ride and any issues are reported to allow fixing by Wheels for All’s maintenance team.

Why become a cycle and equipment checker?

As a cycle Checker, you play a hands-on role in ensuring every cycle is in top condition, safe to ride, and ready for participants to enjoy. Your careful attention to detail — from assessing and reporting any damage to cleaning and maintaining correct tyre pressure — directly contributes to the safety, confidence, and enjoyment of every rider. If you take pride in precision, enjoy working with equipment, and want to make a meaningful impact, this role is a perfect way to be part of creating positive, empowering experiences for your community.

What can I get involved with in this role?

You can get involved with:

  • Is familiar with and understands the equipment storage facility layout and best practice for safe storage
  • Taking equipment and cycles out of storage and setting them up at safe cycle handover zone
  • Liaising with the session lead to understand which equipment needs to be taken out of storage based on participant bookings
  • Cleaning the cycles ready for use
  • Assessing the cycles to ensure they are safe to ride (ABCD check)
  • Identifying, marking and reporting any cycles or equipment that are damaged or in poor condition
  • Performing basic cycle maintenance tasks (additional Wheels for All tier 2 cycle maintenance training)
  • Returning equipment back into storage after the session has finished

We’ve carried out a refresher training for everyone on the ABCD checks and introduced a culture of riding every cycle from the store to the start to ensure everything is safe for our riders.

What makes a great cycle and equipment checker?

A great Cycle Checker is thorough, attentive, and safety-focused, ensuring every cycle is in excellent condition before use. They have a good understanding of cycle maintenance, can spot potential issues quickly, and take pride in keeping equipment clean, safe, and ready for participants. Reliability, organisation, and a methodical approach are key, as is clear communication when reporting faults or concerns.

Do I require any training for this role?

All Cycle & Equipment Checkers complete our Wheels for All Training, gaining hands-on knowledge of our adapted cycles and equipment, how to carry out safety checks, and how to maintain them to a high standard.
