Sally Jameson MP visited Wheels for All Doncaster today to see first-hand how inclusive cycling is transforming the lives of disabled people and those living with long-term health conditions across the city.
Hosted by the national inclusive cycling charity Wheels for All, the visit gave the Doncaster Central MP the opportunity to meet participants, volunteers and staff, learn about the impact of the weekly sessions and see the specialist adapted cycles that enable people of all ages and abilities to enjoy cycling.
Sally also took to the track on one of the adapted cycles, experiencing first-hand how the equipment opens up cycling to people who would otherwise be excluded.
A unique community asset
Based at the purpose-built cycle circuit at the Doncaster Dome, Wheels for All Doncaster has been delivering inclusive cycling sessions since 2022 through a partnership with Doncaster Culture & Leisure Trust (DCLT).
The sessions provide disabled people with access to specialist adapted cycles in a safe, welcoming environment where participants can improve their health, build confidence, make friends and enjoy the freedom of cycling.
During the visit, Sally met participants and volunteers who shared how the sessions have improved their physical and mental wellbeing and provided opportunities that many believed would never be possible.
Sally Jameson MP said:
“It was a real pleasure to visit Wheels for All at the Dome and meet the incredible participants, volunteers and staff who make these sessions possible. The stories I heard today demonstrate the life-changing difference that inclusive cycling can make, helping people improve their health, build confidence and develop lasting social connections.
“Doncaster is fortunate to have such an outstanding facility, and I want to help ensure that more local people know about the opportunities available here. Everyone should have the chance to enjoy the freedom, independence and joy that cycling can bring.”
Joe McTague, Chief Executive of Wheels for All, said:
“We were delighted to welcome Sally to Wheels for All Doncaster and to showcase the incredible work taking place every week.
Every community should have access to an inclusive cycling offer like this. Doncaster is fortunate to have one of the country’s best facilities, with a fantastic partnership, dedicated volunteers and a welcoming community.
Our challenge now is to make sure every disabled person and their family knows this opportunity exists, and to secure the long-term support needed to help the hub continue changing lives for years to come.”
Why inclusive cycling matters
Disabled people are significantly less likely to be physically active than the wider population, not because they lack motivation, but because accessible opportunities are often unavailable. Nationally, 76% of disabled people want to be more active, yet many face barriers including inaccessible facilities, a lack of specialist equipment and limited local provision.
Inclusive cycling removes those barriers by providing adapted cycles, trained volunteers and safe, traffic-free environments where people can enjoy all the benefits of being active.
Every week, Wheels for All Doncaster helps participants improve their physical health, mental wellbeing, confidence and independence, while reducing loneliness and creating lasting friendships.
