As the Wheels for All Barnsley Hub celebrates an amazing six months of inclusive cycling sessions, participants old and new are sharing the difference these weekly rides have made to their lives including Burt, who joined just over a month ago.
After experiencing a stroke, Burt was referred by his occupational therapist to take part in inclusive cycling sessions in Sheffield. While he enjoyed them, he wanted something a little closer to home - and that’s how he found Wheels for All Barnsley.
Since joining, Burt has become a regular at the sessions, attending every week and quickly finding his rhythm on his favourite Tomcat cycle.
“The sessions have helped me get out of the house and build up my stamina again,” Burt shared. “But more than anything, I really enjoy the social side of it, that’s really important to me.”
For Burt, inclusive cycling has become more than just exercise; it’s a way to build confidence and enjoy time outdoors again after his stroke.
Yvonne Stead, Regional Manager for Greater Manchester and Yorkshire at Wheels for All, joined Connor Pickles, Sports Development Manager, and Jessica Sutton, Sports Coach, both from Barnsley Premier Leisure in celebrating the hub’s success:
“Burt’s story really highlights what makes the Barnsley Wheels for All Hub so special. In just six months, we’ve seen people of all abilities come together to enjoy cycling in a way that’s fun, social, and accessible to everyone.
The partnership between Wheels for All and Barnsley Premier Leisure has been key to making this possible - combining our expertise and shared commitment to inclusion has helped create a truly welcoming space for the community. It’s fantastic to see the confidence and joy that have grown through these sessions, and we’re excited to see the hub continue to go from strength to strength.”
The Barnsley Wheels for All Hub continues to welcome participants of all abilities to enjoy safe, inclusive cycling sessions supported by friendly staff and volunteers. Here’s to many more anniversaries and many more participants like Burt enjoying the freedom that cycling can bring!
