Meet Nolan!

Posted:

At Wheels for All, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy and freedom of cycling. For 26-year-old Nolan, our Pedal Away sessions in Stretford have become a regular and important part of his weekly routine, a place where he can feel calm, focused, and connected.

Nolan has been attending our sessions for two years. As someone who is autistic, Nolan has spoken openly with us about how some situations can feel overwhelming. He first came to Pedal Away to find some breathing space and a way to clear his head and manage those feelings.

“I like that I can just cycle and think about the ride,” Nolan told us. “It helps me calm down and feel better.”

One of the things that works so well for Nolan is the structure and flexibility we offer. He always arrives around 10 minutes early, giving himself time to hop on a bike, cycle solo, and burn off some energy before joining the main group. This short window gives him a moment to unwind and feel ready, something we know is really important to him and to many of our participants.

The Pedal Away group has also played a big part in Nolan’s experience. The group has been warm and welcoming, and over time, Nolan has made friends and become a familiar face at the sessions. That social connection is now something Nolan looks forward to each week.

In fact, he now attends every week, sometimes joining both sessions because of how much he enjoys the environment and the people.

Yvonne Stead, Regional Manager for Greater Manchester and Yorkshire, says:
“It’s been brilliant to see Nolan grow in confidence and feel at ease during our sessions. The fact that cycling helps him to reset and connect with others shows just how powerful inclusive cycling can be. We’re really proud that Wheels for All and Pedal Away are a meaningful part of his journey.”

At Wheels for All, we’re not just about cycles. We’re about breaking down barriers, opening opportunities, and building an inclusive space where everyone can ride their way - just like Nolan.
