Every Thursday morning at Birkenhead Park, you’ll find volunteer Keith helping participants get ready to ride, sharing encouragement, and bringing patience and humour to the Wheels for All sessions. Keith has been volunteering with us since October 2021 when he originally joining to support his son, Chris, who has cerebral palsy and is a full-time wheelchair user. What started as a personal step soon grew into something much bigger: a commitment to making inclusive cycling accessible for everyone.
When Keith and Chris first arrived at Wheels for All, Chris required significant support to enjoy cycling. Together with our team, Keith helped him progress from a wheelchair-access cycle to a double hand cycle, and now to riding independently on a single hand cycle.
Week by week, Keith watched Chris go from completing three supported laps to cycling six laps on his own - a milestone that brought pride to the whole family. The joy on Chris’s face as he rides freely is something Keith describes as “priceless” and it’s a joy he has consistently nurtured.
Keith’s dedication didn’t stop at supporting Chris. After noticing that outdated facilities made sessions more difficult for other families and volunteers, he was determined to make improvements that would benefit everyone.
He drafted a detailed proposal for better infrastructure, including:
- Secure cycle storage.
- Accessible toilets.
- Interior and exterior refurbishments.
- Equipment such as standing transfer aids.
Keith even presented the proposal to Wirral Council at committee level, advocating for upgrades that would make Birkenhead Park a more accessible, welcoming space for all participants.
Today, Keith continues to be a vital part of the Birkenhead Park team. Each week, he can be found supporting participants onto their cycles with care and dignity, lightening the load for fellow volunteers, and helping families feel welcomed and empowered.
Thanks to his initiative, sessions are now safer, more efficient, and more accessible meaning that Birkenhead Park is a thriving hub where cycling truly is for everyone.
“I believe we can do more, and do better, with the right support. A standing transfer aid combined with better on-site facilities would enhance dignity, safety, and independence for many.” Keith told us.
Keith’s story is a fantastic reminder of how one person’s compassion and determination can create lasting change. By seeing potential, taking action, and supporting others every step of the way, he embodies everything Wheels for All stands for.
