After meeting on Knowsley’s Mental Health Resilience Forum, hosted by One Knowsley, we planned a series of 9 taster sessions for 3 groups. Two doing Pedal Away and a 3rd using our adapted bikes at Wheels for All. The first 2 groups have now started their rides with us and are having the best time.
Our rides are designed to bring the ladies together, in a safe environment, and offer a chance to mix, share and get back into activity in a steady and supported way.
Our first Wheels for All session had 4 ladies that hadn’t been on a bike for over 200 between them! Joyce, at age 72, is experiencing her first time ever cycling. We’ve got her riding a trike along the Trans-Pennine Trail and she is loving every moment!
On just her second ride on a bike, Joyce said:
“I’ve been looking forward to this all week. I feel like this isn’t me! Because I have no confidence. I can’t believe it. It’s a great feeling.”
These rides are all about providing an easy return to activity. Our aim is to develop a solid group that will continue to ride through the year with a small number of the riders training up to become ride leaders. This will enable the group to become self-sustaining and encourage new members of their cancer support group to join in future rides.
If you are part of a group or organisation in Knowsley that would benefit from cycling and being outdoors then contact Nancy to chat through the options.
