How Bike & Boots helped Jared

The Cycling and Walking to Walk Fund from MerseyTravel targets jobseekers, or those new to a job role within the last 6 months, who want to walk or cycle to work as part of their commute.

Jared works at the Hive Youth Zone in Birkenhead. He is 21 years old and lives in Tranmere.

Jared has told us the following regarding the scheme:

“I am a cleaner at the Hive in Birkenhead. The Bike & Boots project has helped me a lot as it has enabled me to use the new bike to get into work on time. I work split shifts so now my journey time into work is far easier by bike and it now only takes 10 minutes to get in for my first shift, which starts at 5am. Receiving the bike has been a saviour as it saves me time getting to and from work. I work two separate shifts each day over 6 days a week, which means I have 4 work journeys per day.

“I am a returning cyclist as I last cycled when I was 17 on a BMX bike. I fell off and hurt myself riding so I stopped cycling. I collected the bike with Ian from Cycling Projects and he took me on a training ride around Birkenhead Park. Having a new mountain bike and safety equipment and Ian’s training instructions has helped me to get my confidence back on a bike.

“The new bike from Bike & Boots has allowed me to get out more and it’s an added bonus that I can now get to my mum’s which is a 25 minute cycle. Overall, I would say my fitness has improved in the last couple of months and I am really enjoying being back on a bike again.”

I would like to say a big thank you to Cycling Projects for allowing me to benefit from the scheme.
