Our amazing Woking Volunteer, Stephen Hodges received the Inclusive Sports Award, sponsored by Freedom Leisure at the 2020 Sport Woking awards

The Sport Woking Awards celebrate the achievements of Woking’s elite athletes and recognise outstanding contribution to sport within the borough. With most sporting fixtures either cancelled or postponed in 2020, and training activities heavily restricted, this year’s award winners have been praised for their “grit and determination” and rewarded for their continued commitment to their sport.

More than 70 nominations were received by the council covering the diverse array of sports and fitness activities within the borough. Reflecting the impact the pandemic has had on sport during 2020, two new categories, ‘Active Lockdown Challenge’ and ‘Community Contribution’ were introduced, which proved popular with residents.

Deemed by the judging panel to have excelled in their chosen discipline or to have made an outstanding contribution to the development of their sport in spite of the recent challenges.
Stephen was selected he uses his 20 years of experience of working with the elderly, the homeless and the most vulnerable in our community to make a real impact on the participants that attend the Woking Wheels for All sessions. Stephen has volunteered with Cycling Projects for over six years and is an enthusiastic, committed and valued member of the Working Wheels For All team.

The Sports Woking 2020 Judges said:

“Stephen has made a significant contribution in helping to break down the barriers that prevent many people with disabilities from getting active thanks to his outstanding people skills, extensive knowledge and hands on ability. His passion for encouraging participants to develop their confidence, independence and other vital life skills through cycling is what makes him such a successful member of the Cycling Projects team and we are very grateful that he has devoted so much of his time to improving the lives of others through this charity.”

“We are thrilled that Stephen has been recognised for his contribution towards helping people with disabilities. His knowledge, enthusiasm for cycling and passion for wanting to help others is such an inspiration and we are so honoured that he is a part of our team here at Cycling Projects”

Tom Glynn, National Volunteer Coordinator said:

“We are all so proud of Stephens achievements in winning the Inclusive Sports award, he is a volunteer that goes above and beyond to make cycling accessible for everyone, he truly is an inspiration to cycling volunteers across the country.”
